A field guide to the Silurian Echinodermata of the British Isles: Part 1 - Eleutherozoa and Rhombifera Naturalis

The Palaeozoic echinoderms of the British Isles are most diverse in the Silurian and Lower Carboniferous. This guide discusses and illustrates members of all major groups of echinoderms, apart from the crinoids, from the Silurian of these islands. Groups considered include the echinoids (five taxa), ophiuroids (ten taxa) and asteroids (thirteen taxa), and the extinct ophiocistioids (three species) and rhombiferan cystoids (nine species).

Deep-sea ophiuroids (Echinodermata) from reducing and non-reducing environments in the North Atlantic Ocean ArchiMer

The animal communities associated with the deep-sea reducing environment have been studied for almost 30 years, but until now only a single species of ophiuroid, Ophioctenella acies, has been found at both hydrothermal vents and methane cold seeps. Since the faunal overlap between vent and seep communities is small and many endemic species have been found among other taxa (e.g. Mollusca, Crustacea), additional species of ophiuroids were expected at previously unstudied sites. Chemical compositions at reducing sites differ greatly from the nearby bathyal environment. ABSTRACT This paper reports Schizostella bifurcata, a member of the family Gorgonocephalidae for the first time in the Colombian Caribbean. This report is based on specimens collected from the continental shelf of Santa Marta bay, where the species was found associated with gorgonians.

Lower Miocene echinoderms of Jamaica, West Indies Naturalis

Despite being diverse globally, Miocene echinoids are poorly known from Jamaica. Moderately diverse echinoids and other echinoderms have been identified mainly from fragmentary specimens collected from chalks and mass-flow deposits of the Lower Miocene Montpelier Formation, White Limestone Group, near Duncans, parish of Trelawny. This locality has yielded the most diverse association of fossil echinoderms known from the Miocene of Jamaica, including at least ten species in four classes. This fauna is comprised of the isocrinid crinoids Neocrinus sp. cf. N. decorus (Wyville Thomson) and Isocrinus sp.; the ophiuroid Ophiomusium? sp.; the asteroids Astropecten? spp.; and the echinoids Prionocidaris? sp., Histocidaris sp., Echinometra sp. cf. E. lucunter...

Ophiomusium acuferum (Ophiolepididae) and Ophiomisidium pulchellum (Ophiuridae) (Ophiuroidea: Echinodermata), redescription based on the Brazilian specimens Rev. Bras. Zool.

Ophiomusium (Ophiolepididae) and Ophiomisidium (Ophiuridae) are similar, but differ in features such as size of the adult, number of disc dorsal plates, length of the arms, shape of the first ventral arm plates and number of the tentacle. In this contribution, a large number of specimens of Ophiomusium acuferum Lyman, 1869 and Ophiomisidium pulchellum (Wyville Thomson, 1878) were sampled from southeastern and southern Brazilian at depths ranging from 46 to 1300 m. A close analysis has shown that specimens identified as Ophiomisidium pulchellum (C.W. Thomson, 1877) in several Brazilian museums are actually Ophiomusium acuferum Lyman, 1875.
